Not that Anne would be marrying someone less interesting than CW but being a romantic, she was still in love with CW and that was impossible for her to shake off. IMO her faded mien is partly a result of her pining for a lost love. It would be hard for her to marry Charles when her heart was truly overseas. It would be terribly unfair to Charles, and Anne knew it. I do think she felt sorry for Charles' having to put up with Mary, but as for herself, she was better off as the SIL. I just don't think Charles is exciting enough for her, frankly.
