I understand it makes him human and a man with faults, but they are faults that have the capacity to wound deeply. And it is all done as a deliberate act on his part ; to act distantly and politely but coldly towards the woman he once loved. I think its all part of the strange introspection that characterises the people in this particular book,( or perhaps self obsession might be a better term), that no one among the Uppercross/Lyme crowd realises that he is the life and soul with everyone except Anne. Two acts of kindness yes-the Crofts gig and the removal of young Walter, mitigate this a little but they don't atone for his typical behaviour towards Anne at this time,IMHO.
