Are you new?

Who's to say you can't be happy if you choose your life? I don't get why she had waited all this time. Obviously it makes a far better story (since if she had married Charles, there would be no story at all!;), but what good has come out of it for her? She's stuck at home with unfriendly relatives and no say in the running of her household.

The only thing I can think of is that her depression must have been more severe than I've ever thought it before. Not a gentle, prevading melancholy as I've always read her. She could have talked herself out of that by this time.
