You gotta defend your man :) But if I may (gently) debate: In the quoted passage "FW had used such words.." is that the narrator speaking (fact) or is this Anne's reflections (guess)? That has a great bearing on the situation. I had always taken it to be Anne's reflections, but if it is the narrator speaking, then of course you're right.
