I'm sure that as their guest, the Elliots would automatically have taken care of Mrs. Clay's food and lodging (and perhaps things like tickets to concerts which they were attending themselves), but I wonder if they would have paid her a small sum as pocket money as well. Actually, I don't think so - IMO Mrs. Clay would have taken care of any extra expenses out of her own pocket. After all, she was supposed to be there as Elizabeth's friend, not as her paid companion.
