Was Mrs Clay paid to be a companion to Elizabeth?   Written by JanELT (10/12/2008 11:54 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I agree! Never really caught on to the "Mrs. Clay" ..., penned by Line

Interesting thought on "feet of clay." I hadn't thought of Mrs Clay being a weak point among the Elliots. Is that to say that she was a poor companion for Elizabeth and yet no one saw it?

Although I must say IMO, that it is odd for Sir Walter to bring her to Bath and leave Anne behind when Anne was flesh and blood. I wonder what Sir Walter was thinking!

L&T question: When Sir Walter brought Mrs Clay to Bath, what did that mean? Did that mean he paid for her room and board as his daughter's companion? Who paid for her dresses and such things? Is it possible for a companion to pay her own way, sort of like traveling partners?
