Feeling himself "ill-used" by so forced a relinquishmen   Written by Martina (10/12/2008 12:02 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, CW was 23YO and Anne was 19YO when they were engaged., penned by JanELT
Are you new?

Another line I have been pondering.

At first reading I took this to mean how and why the engagement was broken, ie the influence of Anne's family and LR in changing her mind about the engagement.

But I wonder if this could also be alluding to CW's feeling let down by Anne, whom he had thought fully shared in all his confidence and bravado for the future. When she broke off the engagement, could he have also thought that she had doubts about all he had told her he would soon be accomplishing? That she didn't believe in him anymore? Or perhaps, that she never truly had?

For an overly confident man of 23 perhaps, this could be a blow to the ego, in addition to the broken heart. The first time his "luck" had suffered a blow. Because he really could not see it from Anne's point of view.

Does anyone know if "ill-used" had another meaning in JA's time?

BTW, JanELT, I love your insights and the topics you have raised in the GR so far!
