"purchaed independence" indicates that he really didnt want to be controlled by the Elliots nor to be indebted to them for "getting on " in society-as a prospective MP or among the high rollers hanging out at Tattersalls.

He didnt want to be the Elliot's bought man, and marrying a rich woman was his way out of that. Marrying a woman of inferior rank and then insulting them clearly showed just how much he held them and their values in contempt,IMHO . ;-)
