Whenever I read about Mrs Elliot, I am curious about her acquisition of wealth, considering her inferior birth. It would've been nice had JA given us a hint. It might have shed some more light on Mr Elliot's particular nature.
What I learned from P&P is that women in those days tried to "marry up." Considering Mrs Elliot wasn't allowed to work, I had it in my mind that she must've married into wealth. And since divorces were scarce in those days, she must've been somehow freed to marry Mr Elliot, and I conjectured that it must've been her widowhood that had made her available.
However, I have nothing in terms of the novel text to back up my hypothesis. Although so, the idea was so strong in my mind that I read too much into what I was reading :-)
Having said that, there are other possible ways that Mrs Elliot could've become wealthy. Possibly one of these?
- A long lost rich uncle (LOL)
In any case, anyone else here think that Mrs Elliot could've been a widow? Any other thoughts as to her estate?
Another thing I've wondered about is... How old was Mrs Elliot respective to Mr Elliot? How long did the marriage last? Only several years (chap 1)? How did she die?
Curioser and curioser...
