His impetuous nature alienated Lady Russell-Anne's ony hope of an ally. Sir Walter we know has a snobbish distaste for the navy ( remember we were at wr and people like Wentworth were fighting it for us!) and probably disliked not only Wentworths "lowly" origin but his forceful and forthight manner.

I don't think Anne stood a chance because of the toxic combination of young Wentworth and both Lady Russell and Sir Walter's rather horrified reactions to him.
