I can't tell whether he is a Radical as I have insufficient information, but in pursuing his own course he sounds as if he may have an independent spirit as well as a taste for financial independence. It isn't clear whether he married a woman of "inferior rank" because of a principled objection to class distinctions, because he liked her, or simply to get his hands on her money.

I certainly cannot quarrel with his taste in refusing to hang out with Elizabeth and Sir Walter.
