is what the narrator has, at this point, told us about him. He was brilliant, fearless, impetuous, bewitching...unconnected, at a very early stage in a career ladder that was still dominated by patronage, in possession of no savings even though money had passed through his hands...

Yes, we, like Anne, also know by 1814 that he has succeeded as he said he would. but Lady Russell did not know that in 1806.

And we have not yet seen him. We have only been told about him.
