Interesting to think about. Considering Anne was so good at self sacrifice, maybe it made her feel better to think she was denying herself the Captain for **his own good***. Because people around her tend to ask that she sacrifices a lot of her own needs, and she appears valued only by one person for who she is, perhaps she really believes in this? I find it sad that this made Anne feel better, even though her heart was broken.
