I feel pretty much the same way. Frederick Wentworth on first knowing Anne held no rank nor useful connections. With no fortune nor home, he had nothing to offer Anne. As yet, he had achieved nothing in the navy; He did ask Anne to take a leap of faith to become his wife.
At this point we know he is alive and made a fortune and can offer security, to a wife. However, through circumstances of war and Capt. Wentworth's own qualities, despite flaws in her judgement, Lady Russell coud have been right.
