This provides an even clearer meaning to the text. Poor Anne must have had total devotion to carefully peruse the lists month after month, year after year, only to learn scant information about Frederick (and, I imagine, feel a mixture of relief, happiness, regret, and all those bittersweet emotions with every bit of news).

(I must say though that I am very impressed with Anne's brain. She can actually remember and summarize information about a random officer at the drop of a hat! Likewise fascinating. 8-)
