To be honest...   Written by Rae (10/8/2008 1:43 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, In CH 4 it says that..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

Admiral Croft may well not have been a particularly significant connexion, especially in 1806 when he was probably still a Captain himself. A useful connexion had to have connexions himself, and had the curate's brother in law been a man of any real standing in the wider social world, Mr Shepherd might well have known and reminded Sir Walter of this, don't you think? :-)

I am sure having a brother in law who was a captain would have helped perhaps with getting a place on a ship to start with, but you would have needed more than that to get a ship as a Commander and then progress, which is what Wentworth needed in 1806.
