is it snobbery to acknowledge them? The Musgroves don't have the background of the Elliots, yet Lady Russell did wish that Anne had accepted Charles when he asked. That doesn't sound like snobbery to me. Sir Walter disparaging men just because they lose their looks in the Navy - without knowing anything about them. That sounds like snobbery to me. After all, Lady Russell would have known Shepherd's daughter. She had lived in the neighborhood before her marriage.
