After all, Sir Walter would have already started on his downhill slide at this point (being without his wife for about 5 years). It probably wouldn't be obvious it was going to end where it would - but she must have known the struggle Lady Elliot inevitably had trying to keep a rein on the spending. They were best friends after all.
