And let's face it--both the Shepards and the Clays may feel that, from a pecuinary point of view, getting the children completely out of the way while Mrs. Clay mixes in society (in an attempt to find a husband, presumably) may just be a sound investment. If Mrs. Clay marries again, the new husband would have the financial burden of them all.

I know that's harsh, but I suspect it's somewhat true.
