...one has to wonder how it affects their relationship, for Mary to know that her husband chose Anne FIRST, and only proposed to her after being rejected by her sister.

Also, one gets the feeling that Chas. Musgrove's proposal to Mary was "on the rebound", since the ON tells us it was shortly after Anne turned him down.
