Mrs. Clay’s constant toadying is not going to improve Elizabeth’s character.

Elizabeth will never turn to Anne for companionship if the toady is around.

Sir Walter’s vanity makes him easy pickings for a clever lady with assiduously pleasing manners. (;D)
