in consequence of the missive, L+T Question... Baronetage, penned by Claire 6
My first acquaintance with PERSUASION was P2, when it came out in 1995. As an American, and a reader of novels (not JA, I blush to mention) I had a small (VERY small!) understanding of the order of precedence among the titled, and it seemed to me that JA gave us another of her subtle "zingers" with all the to-do about baronets.
Isn't it true that baronets are the lowest on the totem pole (so to speak)of the nobility? If that is true, isn't JA slightly making fun of everyone's being so VERY impressed with Sir Walter's rank? We've read about Sir Walter's conceit, Elizabeth's pride, and Lady Russell's awe just in the first 6 chapters!
What about it?
