in consequence of the missive, A bit of mystery in chapter 3, penned by Shirley Rae
Then we find that she knows all about Admiral Croft ("rear admiral of the white..."), and finally she is the only one who remembers (or the only one who chooses to remember) Mr Wentworth's name, showing that she's not completely ignorant about Mrs Croft as well.
These little hints are what makes me love Jane Austen more and more with every re-read.
In keeping with the post about Elizabeth, isn't it telling that the novel's heroine is introduced in a such a un-heroic-like way ("She was only Anne")? Just think about the beginning of Emma, where the very first word in the novel is "Emma".
