Last night I rewatched the DVD and paid particular attention to the gentlemen's clothing. Captain Harville and Admiral Croft ignore fashion by having their cutawaycoats even-steven with their waistcoats. Sir Walter's daywear is about one inch of cutaway but he sports two inches of waistcoat for evening dress. Captain Wentworth is right at the midline of fashion with a two-inch cutaway length. Charles Musgrove also is in fashion with a two or three inch cut, but he has a tummy so maybe it looks larger. But Mr. Elliot is the dandy with a four to five inch curved cutaway--extremely elegant and modish!--even though he is in mourning. His mourning waistcoat is either deep navy or pure black. I never before noticed how this production gave such clues to the character of the gentlemen by dressing them differently.
Admiral Croft's clothes look like new, good, expensive material even though unfashionably cut. Captain Harville, equally unfashionable, has clothes that look a bit worse for wear.
