Sorry to jump in at the end! It has been my focus to pay careful attention to the character of Anne and was doing well in the beginning, but time and sickness have prevented me from posting. Trust me, you don't want me to post when I am sleep deprived and have 'antibiotic head'!
I have always been intrigued by the difference in the two Annes of P1 and P2 at the beginning of the film. Does anyone else see much of a difference? I see the P1 Anne as being strong headed, in a good way, in tolerably good spirits for her situation, resisting her family and able to seperate her self from her family to the point where their silliness seems not to effect her. As the movie continues, she doesn't seem to change much. P2 Anne is obvioulsy depressed, beaten down by her situation and circumstances, frail-looking and neglected. When Anne arrives at Uppercross, usefulness and change of scene/society wake her up, as well as the intro of a certain tall, dark, and handsome captain. =-) By the end she is radiant.
I have been trying to decide as I read the book which one more acurately portrays Anne of the book, especially in regards to who she was in the beginning of the novel. In the book, Anne did seem a bit stronger in the beginning which surprised me. But I did not imagine her as strong as the P1 version. Though Anne in the novel was strong in principles and was able to stand firm on them, she was depressed and neglected by her inescapable family situation. Eight years of that would depress anyone, to be sure! In P2, Anne seemed not to have a voice at all in the presence of her family, I think weaker than Anne of the book, but this is forgiveable to me.
I have come to the opinion that Anne in P2 was more faithful to Anne of the book. I enjoy the change and second-blooming of Anne in P2. P1's Anne, despite the horrid dress and hairdos, is refreshing to watch once in a while if I want not to be so depressed about her treatment and want a happier movie, but Anne in P2 is closer to my imagination's eye of her character. Did you see a difference? What do you think?
