The cancelled chapters   Written by Cheryl (10/31/2005 12:18 a.m.)
Are you new?

What do you think of these? The cancelled Vol. II, Ch. 10 was replaced with two chapters, Vol. II, Ch. 10-11 (ch. 22-23).

There were some nice, interesting things in there - the Admiral was very funny with his inability to use his "indoor voice" - I liked the clear image this scene painted:

"he now sat down -- drew it a little nearer to her -- & looked, with an expression which had something more than penetration in it, something softer; -- Her Countenance did not discourage. -- It was a silent, but a very powerful Dialogue; -- on his side, Supplication, on her's acceptance. -- Still a little nearer -- and a hand taken and pressed -- and "Anne, my own dear Anne!" -- bursting forth in the fullness of exquisite feeling -- and all Suspense & Indecision were over. -- They were re-united. "

Very sweet. I also liked how Sophie contrived to leave them alone at intervals during the evening.

But this cannot, imo, make up for the loss of so much. If JA hadn't rewritten this chapter, we would not have the "I'm no card-player" scene, the added Mr Elliot/Mrs Clay intrigues, Anne's talk with Captain Harville and of course: The Letter! sigh! A much, much better ending.

What were your impressions?
