Bath is not London. E could find a female jackpot there, but he has made it hard on himself, even so. This is a dumb move for both MC and E, and out of character. I can only conclude JA was in the mood to punish her bad characters here while tidying up the novel. After months of navigating the Eliots, E would fall to this? And it is not like him to be rash. And Mrs. Clay, after years of besieging Sir Walter?

MC better find a rich American and emmigrate.
E better just emmigrate.
