Maybe the letter should have read,

"Do you still like me? check yes or no.

Do you love me? Check yes or no.

I sent such a note to my fifth grad boyfriend. Wasn't exactly "You pierce my soul."

But seriously, James, I can't see Wentworth putting Harville up to such a thing. To use his friend's grief over Fanny in that way? That's too much.
