Epilogues in JA   Written by Jenny Allan (10/27/2005 6:26 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Of yesterday and today, penned by Cheryl

"I love these long passages at the end of Persuasion. P&P is really the only other book where we get an epilogue, as it were - this discussion of the courtship, the going over all the events, large and small, that shaped their feelings. It's wonderful stuff."

I think there is a fair bit of epilogue in Emma. They talk about when they fell in love with each other, when Mr. Knightley began to be jealous of Frank Churchill. Emma says less, because she has more to hide of course. We also have a wrap-up of the Harriet/Robert Martin subplot which is very sweet in that it shows them together as a couple and some little details such as the fact that Emma won't call him "George."

In S&S, I don't think there is an epilogue, though Emma Thompson added a bit of one to the famous deleted kissing scene.

I don't think MP has an epilogue in the same way. Edward falling in love with Fanny happens off stage and as far as I know, she never lets on that she was in love with him the whole time. I always find the ending of MP to be somewhat unsatisfying. Maybe I was just missing an epilogue and couldn't put my finger on it.
