Mary could make a fine difference to not only herself, but to all around her. Anne desribes her in chapter 6 as

...Mary was not so repulsive and unsisterly as Elizabeth, nor so inaccessible to all influence of hers

It would be easy to turn around the whole charcter of the cottage by small changes in Mary.

Let us hope she realises this ! ( The road to Damascus again )
