I suppose I feel that I coud like Mary. She does not seem to be motivated by self interest in the same way as the characters you mentioned. Lucy Steele, General Tilney, the Dashwoods , Mrs Norris are all to me believeable because they are so selfish and their motivatiion is obvious. What I am trying to say, is that they may not be nice people, but they are believable and so not one sided.
Mary is not in their league is she ? She could be redeemed I think. Her journey through life could be greatly improved if she had a more positive outlook and forgot about petty jealousies and pride, much in the same way as Kitty improved at the end of P&P. Am I making sense ?
