Funnily enough, CW uses very similar language back in Ch 20 to describe Benwick's heartbreak over Fanny Harville:

"A man like him, in his situation! With a heart *pierced*, wounded, almost broken!"

I wonder if CW has in someway been projecting some of his own feelings onto Captain benwick? I'm not saying that CB wasn't severely distressed, it's just the choice of language!
