I never thought of that!   Written by Jenny Allan (10/25/2005 6:56 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Malleable Louisa?, penned by Cheryl
Are you new?

I always took it at face value as being a product of the injury. I never thought of it as Louisa's again being accomodating for the sake of a man. Interesting theory. I like it.

I actually have always seen Louisa as a less viperous Lucy Steele. A rival who is manipulative and clever, a bit of an operator. I don't think she is a villain or even as bad as say the manuevering Bertram sisters in Mansfield Park, but you know, all's fair in love and war and women were expected to be maddeningly passive in courtship. Who can blame a girl for taking a little, er, initiative.
