that WWE was talking about auctioning the property, but more like tearing it all down. Such a pithily violent little phrase. It caught my attention (I commented on it elsewhere, won't bore you with a repeat).
I tend to think the latter is correct because it expresses disdain for the property attached to the title, which he doesn't care about, and disdain for the style of architecture,and the grounds. If it is a reference to auctioning, then the insult is a little less profound, reflecting only avarice.
This phrase put me in mind of Mrs. Dashwood immediately seeking to pull down a grove of trees in order to erect a Grecian temple. This shows her disdain for her in-laws, not to wait even until they have found another place. This connection influences my ideas about Mr. Eliot's intentions.
