has sincere affection for Anne. If Anne is in love with him also, Mrs. Smith would really hope for them to be happy together. For her to try and seperate them if they had a mutual & sincere affection would be pointless. I'm inclined to think she would have tried to stop the engagement if she did not believe Elliot was in love with Anne.
