It was bad enough for me to realise several chapters ago that I had been deceived by Mr. Elliot. But his interfering presence in the Pump Room is agony. I must say I think it is the first time in an Austen novel that I haven't seen the true character of one of her false gentlemen from the start. I wonder why that is?!
