All you say may be true, and indeed, I have read the same passage that way in previous reads. But this is one of those events in the book that is colored, I think, by your opinion of Lady Russell and, so as my opinion of Lady Russell changes most every read, so does my thoughts on this passage. ;-)

I still maintain, though, that this is meant to show us more of Anne's state of mind and heart - her preoccupation with Frederick and her apprehension of the first meeting between he and Lady Russell - than it is meant to reveal something about Lady Russell's character.
