Louisa's accident causes her to lose consciousness and the Captain to gain it. I agree he does not penetrate far enough to see that he might have been using Louisa to get to Anne. But, he certainly has a powerful recognition of the role his own "fine words" have played in influencing Louisa. He realizes with a shock that will lead to resignation, that he not only influenced her to jump recklessly, but perhaps to fall recklessly...in love with him. And he now realizes the extent of his own feelings at least toward Louisa...that they don't extend to marriage. He now realizes how his attentions toward her appeared to others, and probably to Louisa herself.
