Mrs Clay, née Penelope Shepherd, was said to have had an unfortunate marriage. This could be taken to imply that even though her husband is now dead, that they were separated (not, of course, divorced) before his death -- or at the very least, that her married state was not a happy one, and she spent an inordinate amount of time in her father's house, even when her husband was still alive.

In other words, her current widowhood is not necessarily entirely respectable, and is perhaps a tiny bint tainted by rumours of past "unfortunateness".
