I thought of that possibility too, Ramya. Part of me really wants it to be the case that Anne was saying "women in that line of work" not in that specific social caste. And as you rightly point out, she is sitting there in Westgate Buildings with humble Mrs. Smith instead of out fawning over the Dalrymples in Laura Place.
