I think his encouragement of Louisaís reckless behavior both at Uppercross and at Lyme was not about Louisa or her behavior but about his resentment to Ann. He blames Ann for been overly cautious and persuaded, so he encourages recklessness and obstinate behavior in Louisa. He (unconsciously, Iím sure) was using Louisa to hurt Annís feelings, and by that jeopardized Louisaís health. This is indeed a weakness.
