I think his encouragement of Louisa’s reckless behavior both at Uppercross and at Lyme was not about Louisa or her behavior but about his resentment to Ann. He blames Ann for been overly cautious and persuaded, so he encourages recklessness and obstinate behavior in Louisa. He (unconsciously, I’m sure) was using Louisa to hurt Ann’s feelings, and by that jeopardized Louisa’s health. This is indeed a weakness.
