Anne's *creator* was a product of her time and place, as we all are, and despite her uniqueness I'm sure she shared most of her contemporaries' basic attitudes. Ramya points out that Anne is not snobbish about the Dalrymples, but in my experience it's perfectly possible to be snobbish in one area of your life while being quite reasonable in another. Two other areas of the novel where I think snobbery raises its head is in the narrator's (and Anne's) attitudes towards Mr. Elliot's late wife, and towards Mrs. Clay.
