the Crofts would broach the subject so that she could learn something of Frederick's reaction to the news. They would only have learned of it from him, since they were away from K and did not coorespond with the Musgroves.

If Anne brought it up, she might never be able to casually ask about FW's feeling on the subject.

Since the Admiral brought up the engagement she was able to inquire about how FW felt without appearing too eager for the information.
