since he had not been able to do anything for Fanny Harville He must have been utterly frustrated to lose his beloved without being able to do something. Not even sit by her side while she was dying. So this tenderhearted man is much inclined to protect and comfort another woman.
I wonder if Louisa ever felt any disappointment or regrets regarding Captain Wentworth? Not much I wager, certainly nothing to Benwick's grief, but even so, perhaps this was another subject where their 'poem-sharing' could meet with some mutual understanding.
