Embarrassment   Written by Barbara (10/18/2005 3:52 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Speaking of it, penned by Cheryl
Are you new?

I think that during the ceremonial visits, Anne was listening for any hint that they had received this news. Then, for whatever reason--either lack of opportunity or the presence of Lady Russell--she could not bring it up herself or never had a chance to find out anything else until her private talk with the Admiral.

I think she didn't let on to him that she knew at first in the hope of getting as much information out of him as she could--especially about Frederick's reaction. At that point it would have been kind of embarrassing to admit that she did know about the engagement all along.
