What jumped out at me from this paragraph was   Written by Rosalie (10/17/2005 1:38 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, "Little hints" from Lady Russell, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

the line....."and only superior to her (Lady Elliot) in being more highly valued".

Does this mean that Anne's mother was not highly valued by SW and possibly Elizabeth? That is the impression I got. If so, then Lady Elliot's principles were at serious odds with her husband's. He did not appreciate her attempts to 'promote his real respectability' by humour and concealing his failings. Chpt.1.

He must have felt very constrained in his marriage. Conceited fool! No wonder he has little use for Anne. She is much like her mother.
