Spanish names   Written by Kalyn (10/15/2005 7:00 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Urg! Annoyances with the regency era, penned by helena6
Are you new?

I lived in Spain for seven years, and besides family names, traditionally most girls' names start with "Maria." My mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and niece are all named "Maria del Pilar," and called "Pilar." One of the reasons (although not the main one) I didn't get married in the church there was that I was told that if I was married by an older, more rigid priest he would have referred to me during the ceremony as "Maria Kalyn" which I would have hated. When my husband and I named our daughter Claudia, the first question we were asked was, "Who in the family is named Claudia?" :-)
