...Mary's *motives* for criticizing Captain Benwick are (as always) highly suspect, but once in a while she still manages to come to the right conclusion (IMHO)!

As to societal expectations, you're probably quite right, Maisy. As I said, everybody seems to accept CB's behaviour, though I wonder how they would react if Captain Benwick were *Miss* Benwick, getting interested in someone new only three or four months after losing her gallant fiance at sea!

(But I'm still not impressed...;-)
