Grief is an individual thing. It may indeed follow a pattern Written by Annette J. (10/15/2005 7:43 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, The Captain Benwick debate, penned by Jenny Allan

(the stages of grief or mourning) but the timing is different for each individual. I think the captain found a kindred spirit in Anne that he might not have found in others of his acquaintance. That she is an attractive and intelligent young woman doesn't necessarily mean that his initial attraction was of a romantic nature.
