At least Mrs. Clay is *suggesting* that she should leave now. In the text, I think the word "decent" is more important than the word "pretence" here. Of course she doesn't really mean it, but how often are good manners a matter of pretending to feelings you don't really have? It's Sir Walter and Elizabeth who are really to blame, IMO!
